Catwalk Show Review : Fashion Awareness Direct

Vauxhall Fashion Scout are proud to present the 2010 showcase of FAD Fashion Futures 2, the Junior Awards: An initiative which through a series of workshops, groups of 16-19 year olds gathered to create one outfit each, which they designed, cut and constructed in just 5 days! 24 out of the 130 initial students were selected to display their creations at the Freemasons Hall last night.

From a brief inspired by the V&A’s newly opened Medieval and Renaissance galleries, an explosion of delicate draping, creative cutting and pretty prints invaded the runway, such as Yashoda Rogers’ pink baby doll dress complete with a wired Peter Pan collar, and an oversized tailored smoking jacket with paisley patterned lapels by Lauren Hobby.

After the show had finished Zandra Rhodes (complete with her signature stylised pink bob) appeared in front of the audience to introduce the FAD European Fashion Design winners, Paul Vasileff and Shahira Bakhoum, whom together form, ‘SHAPAUL.’ Their outfit; a black and silver leather tailored jacket containing metallic knitted sleeves, representative of chainmail, paired with wetlook slim leg jeans, assisted the design-duo’s victory.

Other winners of the night included Karmen Marie Parker, who snapped up the award for ‘Commercial Innovation’ for her acid-wash, denim dungaree playsuit, Sarah Kilkenny for her extensive research into the project and Audre Augusto whose gathered puff sleeve evening dress awarded him the title of ‘Creative Pattern Cutter.’

But the star of the night was Lewisham College’s, David Short, who was titled the over all FAD Fashion Futures 2 winner and presented with a work placement at innovative design label, Religion.  David’s garment was a green taffeta party dress clinched at the waist by elaborate folds and gathers. Full-length sheer sleeves that floated gracefully against the model’s side added an interesting, contemporary aesthetic to a classic design.

Described as "an intense learning curve" by previous winner, Prash Murale Etharan, the initiatives provided by FAD create fantastic opportunities for young people to learn new skills as well as introduce themselves to the industry through the widely acclaimed platform at Vauxhall Fashion Scout.
