NEWS| Merit Award & Ones To Watch AW12/13 Announced!

Vauxhall Fashion Scout, the internationally recognised home of new talent, is delighted to announce Phoebe English as the Merit Award winner and Anne Sofie Madsen, Heohwan Simulation, Myrza de Muynck and Nova Chiu as Ones To Watch for AW12/13.

    Phoebe English

The highly acclaimed Merit Award gives the winner a fully sponsored catwalk show and exhibition space at Vauxhall Fashion Scout during London and Paris Fashion Weeks, and will receive £1000 bursary.

Phoebe English, co-winner of the L’Oreal Professional Creative Award and Central Saint Martins graduate, was awarded Ones To Watch SS12 at Vauxhall Fashion Scout. Phoebe has established herself as a luxury womenswear label with intricate construction the centre of her design ethos and an attention and precision to beauty. By returning to lost, forgotten or little-used techniques, Phoebe English’s creations raises the awareness and respect for construction and surface texture and thus bring a new dimension to young London design talent.

‘Phoebe English has demonstrated a remarkable design talent which is reflected in the make of each piece.  From her graduate collection through her Ones To Watch show she has explored individual techniques and is developing a unique vision of design.  With the Merit Award she will be able to take this further and to an even wider audience”
Martyn Roberts, Director, Vauxhall Fashion Scout

Anne Sofie Madsen, Heohwan Simulation, Myrza de Muynck and Nova Chiu are the winners of Ones To Watch AW12/13.

Ones To Watch is a springboard for the new generation of emerging, innovative designers. Over the past four seasons Ones To Watch has been responsible for launching the likes of Eudon Choi, David Longshaw, Tze Goh, Hermione de Paula and Dean Quinn to the market.

Anne Sofie Madsen established her own label in 2010 after graduating from The Royal Danish Academy of Arts School of Design. Drawing is an essential part of Anne Sofie’s work and the idea of Animalism always plays a role in her collections, capturing the soul and contrasts between the primitive and the civilised in each piece.

Heohwan Simulation Hwan Heo, graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2007 before setting up his own label, Heohwan Simulation, in 2010. His experimental pieces stem from an orginal background in menswear design. Inspired through a critical viewpoint of fashion history, Heohwan´s key silhouettes are executed with an aesthetic beauty.

Graduating from Central Saint Martins this year, Myrza de Muynck combines luxe with nostalgia and youthfulness to create elaborate hand painted prints and hand embroidery. The Dutch designer describes her work as ‘casual chic’, playing with a tomboyish sexuality within a sportswear like silhouette.

Nova Chiu won Collection of the Year on her graduation from London College of Fashion this year. With previous experience at Matthew Williamson, Richard Nicoll and Anna Sui, Nova executes a unique approach to working with fabrics. Influenced by the introduction of some of the undiscovered Chinese cultures to the modern world, Nova mixes rich textures with heavy embroidery, such as deep brocades with wool mixed with experimental digital prints on varied fabrics.

Congratulations to this seasons' winners!

Hellen Bullock featured in Dazed digital.

Hellen Bullock, who not only exhibited as part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout exhibition room during September 2011 Fashion week, but also genially illustrated some of the catwalks with her personal drawing style, has been featured at Dazed Digital as part of their Rise section.

Don´t know her yet? This is how Dazed described her, and we love it: "For anyone who thinks a Mark Rothko piece too depressing, fashion textiles designer Helen Bullock’s MA collection is like a fresh breath of life. Bold, bright, glittered shapes and blocks of jarring floral"

"Bullock’s visceral relationship with her materials is a direct manifestation of the designer’s own self - vivacious, spontaneous and real."

Read the whole interview (Dazeddigital.com) to discover how she describes her own aesthetic, why she does not use digital print, or which are the 13 colors she has dyed her hair, so far.

Finally, we have to quote this whole part of the interview, as we proudly have the results of what they are talking about... Read and scroll down.

"
DD: You did illustrations for the Vauxhall shows – what were you looking out for?
Helen Bullock
: I’ve never done moving drawings before. I do a lot of quick poses in my illustrations classes (Helen also teaches on short courses at CSM) and with that I look out for weird poses, so hopefully there’ll be some kind of weird movement in there.
DD: I don’t know if the models are going to give you that Helen.
Helen Bullock
: I know! I’ll be looking at the clothes a lot more but just any kind of strong features, bold lines or color and signature details. "

Wonderland Magazine Interviews Leutton Postle

Jack Mills from Wonderland magazine talked to our SS12 Merit Award winner, Leutton Postle, or how he described them  "the Lennon and McCartney of knitwear design"

The interview jumps from which are their favorite fabrics to knit,  how they got their interest in knitting or how they started to be Leutton Postle, to questions the like: which one are their new years resolutions, where the answer for that is taking more sausages or dieting, or how they going to decorate their studio for the festive times.

And finally the best question and best answer:

"If you were to knit a hero of yours a Christmas jersey – who would it be for?"
THE SPICE GIRLS. Personalised jumpers for each of them, as they were…

VFS suggestions for the weekend.

Can you feel it? it is the Christmas festive time coming closer and closer. At the VFS office we are chatty chatty organizing everything for this weekend. We thought about sharing with you some of our ideas for the first Weekend of December.

Friday night:
What about a night market in Dalston? we just heard of this, and we think it suits for our plans tonight ... Launching on Friday 25th November and running every Friday night until Christmas - it’s East London’s first ever night time food market. Friday nights in Dalston will never be the same again. Running from 6pm until midnight the Long Table will offer an impressive hand picked selection of London’s finest street food, a bar and music.

Saturday:
After spending the night around East, why not head West? Harrods, one of London´s most typical places to experience Christmas at the city. For the "Way in" Christmas event, David Longshaw will be in there drawing Maude in what ever customers have bought that day,

from 10am - 8pm The event is taking place on Harrods Fourth Floor ‘Way In’ department.

Also Henry Holland will be serving on the tills, offering style advice as well as all sorts of other things going on including a chance to win a Harrods Hamper with one of David´s scarves in.

And last but not least our suggestion for Sunday:
Why don´t you visit Boxpark? the world’s first pop-up mall!

BOXPARK strips and refits shipping containers to create unique, low cost, low risk, ‘box shops’. Put them together with a unique mix of international fashion, arts and lifestyle brands, galleries and cafés and you’ve got the world’s first ‘pop-up’ mall – so named because its basic building blocks are inherently movable: they can, and will, literally pop up anywhere in the world!

So grab some friends, and come to Shoreditch to enjoy this new and exciting initiative!
Three different plans including a bit of fashion, food, shopping and the first pop-up mall!
Enjoy your weekend!

Carmen : A Life in Fashion

Normally associated as being a hub of emerging fashion talent, the internationally-renowned London College of Fashion has adopted a rather different trend for winter; yesterday unveiling their celebratory homage to a timeless icon in the fashion industry.
Carmen Dell’Orefice, for those who have been living under a fashion-repelling rock, is to the modelling industry, what couture is to Paris – completely necessary.  After making her Vogue debut in 1947, aged 15, Carmen’s elegance and regal beauty has since become a resounding icon of the fashion industry.

Vogue (October Issue) 1947

The exhibition, situated in the Fashion|Space|Gallery at London College of Fashion’s site on John Prince’s Street, showcased a beautiful collection that combined famous shoots – by the likes of Norman Parkinson and Gleb Derujinsky – with an intimate selection of photographs that offer visitors a glimpse into the private life of a legend.

Carmen, by Norman Parkinson, 1959

On the books of some of the most respected modelling agencies in the world, going into her 80’s, Carmen’s career as a model is as successful as ever; continuing to epitomise the eternal glamour behind an ever-changing industry.

Carmen: A Life in Fashion will be at the Fashion|Space|Gallery at the London College of Fashion site on John Prince’s Street, until 14th January 2012.
