Designer Spotlight @Famirvoll

Norwegian-born designer Fam Irvoll graduated from Esmod International in 2005, and is another of our designers to cultivate their technique at London’s Central Saint Martins.
-
Since graduating in 2008, Irvoll’s signature use of bold colours and 3-Dimentional construction techniques has earned her an incredibly impressive client list - with the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Paloma Faith sporting her designs.

Irvoll cites the beautiful illustrations and cartoon-incarnations of Lewis Carrol’s “Alice in Wonderland” characters as her inspiration, and draws upon its lofty sentiment by exploring cakes, confectionery and toys in her designs, winning the attention of the media- recently being featured in Wonderland, Spindle and Black Book magazines.

Witness the wonderment first-hand with Fam’s Autumn/ Winter ’12 showing at the VFS show-space on Friday 17th at 12.30pm.

Phoebe English interviewed by top British Blogger @SusieBubble.

Susanna Lau, known more commonly by her blogging alter-ego Susie Bubble, is notorious for championing new and emerging talent. So obviously, it's only natural that she is a fan of Vauxhall Fashion Scout's A/W 2011 Merit Award Winner Phoebe English.

Beginning with a declaration of her love for attending both On and Off Schedule times, during Fashion Week Susie makes sure that she divides her time between Somerset House and the home of Vauxhall Fashion Scout- the Freemason's Hall in Covent Garden. At last season's shows, Susie managed to sneak backstage to catch a glimpse of VFS's 'One's To Watch' show before it hit the catwalk and admits that Phoebe English was one of the designers to catch her eye.

This week, Vauxhall Fashion Scout brings you an exclusive interview- with Susie Bubble heading to Phoebe's design studio just weeks before her exciting catwalk show, for an exclusive review of her SS12 collection.

Read the exclusive interview with Merit Award Winner Phoebe English and a review of the collection, in full on Susie's world famous blog here

VFS alumni Iris van Harpen showed at Paris Couture

Since showing with Vauxhall Fashion Scout in 2010, Dutch designer Iris van Herpen has generated an en-masse following and picked up several design awards along the way. Her recent showing at Paris’ Couture Fashion Week has fast garnered more attention, earning her the acclaim of the creative industry’s most influential insiders.

Van Harpen’s Spring couture collection presented spectator’s with a spectrum of silvers and glossy blacks in thigh-skimming silhouettes that would suggest directional design, pushing couture futher into the future. However, whilst the collection seemed fundamentally futuristic, the crux of Van Harpen’s designs was the exploration of the atypically feminine. Using cylindrically-arranged plexiglass paillettes to trace the contours of the female form, the Dutch designer suggested a fluidity that showcased her unique ability to capture motion in the utterly immovable.

This suggestion of fluidity is in stark contrast to the duskier, earthy hues of the sharp-shouldered, cut-out bodices itermittedly punctuating the collection. It’s this contrast that reinforce’s Van Harpen’s claims that the essense of her work lies in her ability to create “forms that compliment and change the body, thus emotion”, as the previously irridescent contours are immediately stripped back to cut a harsher- decidedly hostile figure.

Van Harpen reminds us of her feminine futurism as quickly as she stripped it away by reintroducing the shimmering silk of the opening sheath dress. However, this time with plexiglass embellishments that- from a distance- imply a softness, but upon inspection sharply instruct you to “look, but NOT touch”. A temperament all too familiar to those of you with women in your life, I’m sure...

All things considered, it’s certainly a collection that has us proverbially poking our tongues out and teasing “nurr, we found her first...!”, as the rest catch-up and marvel at her manipulation of ancient craft and modern, digital technique. Whether it’s the feminine modernity of this Avant-Garde’s silhouhettes and structures, or the simple fact that her name is one you’ll become familiar with: Iris van Harpen embodies futurism-  however you choose to look at it.

... now just imagine the talent waiting to be showcased by our A/W12 designers.

@1883magazine interviews Charlotte Taylor

In September 2012 Charlotte Taylor launched her collection as part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout award. As we always try to have an eye on what our alumni is up to, have a look to the interview 1883 magazine did to her:
"Hailed as one of Vauxhall Fashions Scout’s ‘Ones to Watch’, Charlotte Taylor’s collections are illuminated by beautifully bold contrasts and a treasure box of playful patterns and colours.  Upon graduating from Central St Martins, the young designer was snapped up by Luella, until she launched her own eponymous label in 2009."

Designer Spotlight: KrystofStrozyna.

Krystof Strozyna is something of a LFW pro. This AW12 collection is his ninth collection since graduating from Central St Martins in 2007 and he shows no signs of slowing down. Known for his simple lines, elegant tailoring and figure flattering shapes, he has, and rightly so, gained quite the celebrity following.

His collections have also been favoured by the press, with his work appearing in various publications such as Vogue UK, Vogue Italy, Vogue Russia, Elle UK, Elle US,  Wonderland, The Sunday Times Style, Numero and Harrods Magazine.

The SS12 collection, which debuted at Vauxhall Fashion Scout last September, saw Strozyna team his trademark look of high fashion femininity with delicate sixties bouffants and paled down make-up. He continued to follow the contours of a woman’s form by creating elegant ready to wear pieces such as prim pastel chiffon blouses, panelled blazers and asymmetric dresses. The collection in a nutshell? Detailed, elegant and fresh.

If this whets your appetite, then you don’t have long to wait, Krystof Strozyna’s AW12 Collection is showing at VFS, Freemason’s Hall on Friday 17th February at 1.30pm,
