NEWS| Exclusive Insight into Pam Hogg for The Hunger

Vauxhall Fashion Scout designer and all-round cultural icon Pam Hogg will be featured in The Hunger, out May 10th. Biannual mag The Hunger is Rankin's new-comer and fourth magazine in publication, alongside Fashion Scout favourites Dazed & Confused, AnOther and AnOther Man.

VFS caught up with The Hunger's Assistant Editor Amelia Phillips to chat all things Pam Hogg:
"Pam is heavily involved in this issue. She actually styled a shoot of her own collections from the past 4 years - it was shot in the streets of Bermondsey. As well as that, we've got an intimate interview with Pam. She tells us how heavily music has influenced her work and how she fell into design but discovered a love for it. She explains that although the way she works means that operating within the industry can be tough, there's nothing else she'd rather do."

Issue 2 is out on 10th May plus their website launch on May 14th, both not to be missed.

NEWS| VFS catches up with Joseph Turvey following Shanghai Fashion Week

AW12 Men's Ones to Watch star Joseph Turvey opened Shanghai Fashion Week on April 17th with his latest collection. The fashion week, sponsored by Loreal and Absolute vodka has become renowned as platform for young Chinese and international designers.

Once Joseph Turvey returned from Shanghai, VFS caught up with him to chat about SFW...
"Showing during Shanghai fashion week was amazing. Shanghai is a city like no other... The buildings look like they are something from science fiction novel. Presenting the collection to such a massive audience and completely different target market was a nerve racking and extremely rewarding. Shanghai fashion week is growing each season with Dior and PPQ headlining this season. My show gained numerous press attention and I was interviewed by China Fashion TV stations and publications after the show. There is talk of showing in Hong Kong in June...Which would be fun."

Keep up to date on Joseph Turvey by following him and us on Twitter!

COLLECTIONS| Raffaele Ascione, Myrza de Muynck & Leutton Postle Press & Sales Day

This week, we paid a visit to VFS designers, Raffaele Ascione, Myrza de Muynck, and Leutton Postle for their AW12 press and sales day. Whilst you may have seen us boast of cake on Twitter, we can promise, that's only the second thing that kept us there...

The Central Saint Martins grads took to Mowlem Galleries to set up shop, and discuss their collections with the press; discussions that dropped hints at what to expect beyond Autumn/Winter... We can't share anything yet, but when the time comes to spill, you're first on our list, so make sure you follow us on Twitter! You'll find Raffaele, Myrza and Leutton Postle on there too, giving you first-hand insights into their creative process.

NEWS| VFS Graduate Showcase designer Steven Tai wins Chloe award at Hyeres Festival

Vauxhall Fashion Scout are ecstatic that Graduate Showcase designer Steven Tai was crowned the winner of the Chloe award at Hyeres Festival 2012.

Last season, Vauxhall Fashion Scout presented our very first own Graduate Showcase with 11 graduates selected from across the UK to present their work at the Freemason's Hall in Covent Garden. Steven Tai from Royal College of Art, London was one of those eleven graduates, and since has gone on to work for prestigious designer Stella McCartney.

Steven's collection was "based on the idea of the nerd and combining that with the love of books". The collection embodies classic ruffles and the quintessential 'nerd' aesthetic of high waisted trousers, tailored shirts and round-rimmed spectacles.

Steven was one of the hand-picked 10 finalists at the Hyeres Festival in France and this weekend he was announced as the winner of the prestigious Chloe prize. The prize fund is worth 15,00 (approx £12,197) and will provide Steven with mass exposure within the industry.

The prestigious couture house of Chloe became part of the award panel for the first time this year and will continue for another three, Steven being the first ever recipient of the award.

Full list of winners:
The Public Palais de Tokyo / Villa Noailles Award: Lucas Sponchiado

DESIGNER EXCLUSIVE| Jennifer Morris Interview following Young Scottish Designer Nomination

Last week, it was announced that Vauxhall Fashion Scout designer Jennifer Morris has been nominated for the Young Scottish Designer of the Year award, sponsored by the Scottish Fashion Council.  Jennifer is hot property at the minute so we just had to catch up with her! We are pleased to bring you a VFS exclusive interview with Jennifer and a cheeky look at her studio.

First of all, congratulations on being nominated Young Scottish Designer of the Year, what would winning this mean to you?
Thank you.  I am genuinely just so pleased to have been shortlisted for this nomination.  It is fantastic that there are opportunities like this for young designers to be exposed to the press and also have the opportunity to meet the fantastic selection of judges that are involved in this event.  I think though that winning Young Scottish Designer of the Year would help affirm that all the hard work and long hours that have been put in so far are worth it and just part of the journey towards establishing my name within the fashion industry.

Where were you when you found out that you’d been nominated?
I was in my studio busy working away on the next season Spring/Summer 2013 collection.  I was so pleased I left early and went to see a band and have a pint to celebrate.

What have you been up to since we saw you at LFW in February, debuting your collection at our exhibition showspace?
I had so much fun exhibiting with Vauxhall in February.  It was hard work and definately a learning curve but it has really helped me focus on my label and the direction I want to take it in for further seasons.  I think I slept for about a week after the exhibition finished though, and went back to Edinburgh for a holiday to see my family and take stock of the whole experience.  Then it was back to work.  I have been busy researching and applying for various funding opportunities and trying to promote the latest collection to press.  I have also been busy researching and designing for next season and working on new print and embroidery designs.

You’re a recent graduate from LCF but you’ve been praised by Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Grazia, how does the positive press from such well known publications affect you?
It was so exciting and overwhelming when I finished my course and had such fantastic press.  When I was studying I was so concentrated working on the collection for such a long time that it is hard to see it from an external viewpoint.  There is so much talent at LCF that I was shocked in the week following the show the amount of press that were talking about my collection.  The positive response definately helped give me the confidence to launch my own label.

If you could dress anyone – who would it be and what would you design for them?
I would love to dress Lykke Li I think she always looks amazing.  I would probably have to venture into the realm of black to create something that would really suit her though.  But I would go all out with volume, embroidery and feathers to create a piece full of movement and texture.

Can you describe to VFS blog readers a typical day in the studio?
I think every day is different and that is what makes it so interesting.  I thought setting up my own label would just allow me day after day of free creativity, but there is so much organisation behind everything to make the business work.  I still handle everything on my own so can be doing PR for the label one day, designing the next and dealing with budgets and finances the next day.  It can be really hard work but it is really rewarding.

How is your SS13 collection shaping up? Can you tell us anything about it?
I am really excited about the new collection!  There is going to be a lot of colour, embroidery and some really fun prints.
